2018 Undergraduate Design Award Winners

In the Spring 2018 Synthesis Studio, graduating seniors collaborated with local stakeholders on the design of a new Cultural Arts Center for the city of Columbia, SC, located on a prominent site along Main Street in the historic Cottontown district. Students began the semester documenting the site and gathering feedback on development goals and needs for cultural arts space in the city from partner organizations AIA Columbia, Historic Columbia, the City of Columbia, One Columbia History + Arts and the Cottontown Neighborhood Association. The project brief called for a building of approximately 32,000 square feet including fine and performing arts spaces and community / educational spaces. Students also addressed the design of exterior spaces, such as a sculpture garden, studios and a community garden, anchoring the facility into the fabric of the adjacent Cottontown neighborhood and the city at large.

The final projects were reviewed by a remarkable jury of Tom Savory (Watson Tate Savory, Columbia), Lisa Lanni (McMillan Pazdan Smith, Greenville) and Valerie Zimany, (Interim Chair / Assoc. Professor of Art, Clemson). The jury recognized three projects with cash awards: Olivia Sipler’s project was awarded first place, Diego Bazzani received second place, and Joshua Rowell was honored with third place. Two additional students, Sarah Pyne and Trey Daniel, received honorable mentions.

During a separate exhibit of exemplary projects at the end of the semester, AIA Columbia selected Colin Bland’s project, entitled “AERO,” for a 2018 Design Excellence Award.
