Study Abroad

In addition to the programs involving study of religion in Israel & Jordon and the study of philosophy & religion in China, the department is currently developing a special study abroad program for Law, Liberty, & Justice philosophy majors.

I. The World of Jesus of Nazareth: Israel & Jordon, May 12-29, 2019

Travel to Israel and Jordan to encounter the world in which Jesus of Nazareth, a Galilean Jew, lived, died, and inspired a Jewish movement that would evolve into the world’s largest religion - Christianity. Ride on the Sea of Galilee, visit the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, experience Roman games in an ancient Hippo- drome, stand before the amazing rock-cut structures of Nabataean Petra, walk through sites traditionally associated with Jesus' birth and death, and, of course, float on the Dead Sea. If history, archaeology, the Bible, inter-religious contact, and hitting the beach are your thing, then study the world of Jesus with us!

II. Philosophy/Religion Program in China

The department of Philosophy & Religion is organizing a new study abroad program which will let Clemson students earn Clemson credits while spending six weeks in China! All classes are taught in English -- knowledge of Chinese is not necessary to participate.

Host University

Students and faculty participating in the trip will live on the campus of Xi’an  International Studies University in Xi’an, China.  This is a university specializing in foreign language training, so there will be plenty of Chinese students eager to practice their English.

Course Information

All students must enroll in both

  • Phil 314 (Comparative Topics in Eastern and Western Philosophy) and
  • Phil 402 (Topics in Philosophy: Multiculturalism)

These courses are taught in English by Clemson faculty and will award Clemson credits. You don’t need to be a philosophy major to participate in this study abroad opportunity.
