    Javaria Lewis

“Javaria Lewis is from Summerville, SC and graduated from Summerville High School in 2020. She is currently a junior GBS major, minoring in Cluster Social Sciences. She states, the reason she chose to major in Global Black Studies was “due to the eye-opening perspectives on everyday people living around the world and the chain reaction history has on our everyday politics. Working in social justice nonprofit work at the Grove-Cypress Action Fund has been one of my ultimate goals ever since I went to the GBS Panel in Professor Roland’s course Intro to Pan African Studies my sophomore year. One of the panelists she brought in … inspired me to switch into the major along with Professor Roland and I’ve had an amazing time since. Thanks to GBS, I now have the opportunity to advocate for social justice for underrepresented communities.””

“MiKayla Metz is from Columbia, SC and graduated from Spring Valley High school in 2020. She is a junior Global Black Studies major double minoring in Public Policy and Community & City Planning and Development. In her words: “To me, the best part of being a Global Black Studies major is the variety of course offerings and opportunities. This June some of us traveled to St. Croix for a conference and it was my first time traveling to a Black country. I chose to major in Global Black Studies one from a personal interest in exploring our culture and literature but also as a stepping stone to my career goals of activism work, writing, and carving out my own path."”
