Innovations in Surgical Environments

The Center for Health Facilities Design and Testing at Clemson University will be hosting a two-day intensive workshop, exploring how different aspects of ambulatory surgery center design impact patient safety, efficiency, and the patient experience. The workshop will provide actionable tools and approaches to support project teams in the design of safer, more ergonomic ambulatory surgical environments, and represents the culmination of a four-year multi-disciplinary research effort. This workshop will be limited to 120 attendees, providing an intimate opportunity to interact with leaders and innovators in surgical environments.

What you will learn

Day 1 topics that will be explored

  • Innovations and trends in outpatient surgery
  • Case study exemplars in outpatient surgical environments
  • Designing preoperative and postoperative workspaces
  • Designing outpatient waiting areas
  • Findings from a 4-year patient safety learning lab focused on OR design
  • Evidence-based design strategies for OR design
  • Preview of the newly released Safe OR Design Tool

Day 2 simulation intensive interactive activities

  • Goal identification
  • Journey modeling
  • Interactive gaming exercises
  • Scenario-based simulation activities in the OR prototype
  • Debriefing session

Who should attend

This unique two-day workshop is for architects, designers, clinicians, health system representatives, and engineers who specialize in OR design, and/or who are currently in the process of designing and building surgery centers. This event will support teams involved in new construction and renovation projects. The goal of this workshop is to provide industry leaders with an in-depth knowledge of surgical center design, and support others in applying a human-centered approach into their current or future OR projects.

What others have said

“The addition of academic researchers into our design teams has become a critical part of our success. Right now, my team is working with Clemson University’s Center for Health Facilities Design and Testing to reimagine the c-section suite for a client in Miami.”

Vice President & Managing Principal, Leo A Daly

“What a wonderful service you have provided. Seeing the actual scale of the room with furniture and equipment placed in the room was most beneficial. We were able to see the work flow patterns/movement of the nurse in the room and see that the sterile field was not compromised. Door and video placement was crucial for the physicians, as well as the booms for equipment to maximize space and efficiency.”
