CU First

Chronic conditions and disease in modern Western society are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems and directly related to modifiable health behaviors according to the Centers for Disease Control.  As of 2012, half of all adults (117 million people) had one or more chronic health conditions. Chronic conditions accounted for seven of the top 10 causes of death in 2010, with nearly 48% caused from heart disease and cancer alone.  Chronic diseases, inflammation, food addiction, obesity, and other conditions that plague Americans are all results of the interplay between our genes and our environment as a direct result of lifestyle choices.  Modifying lifestyle can be a powerful tool for those who want to transform the environment for their body to live and play.

CU First based on FirstLine Therapy, an evidenced based, professionally supervised, personalized lifestyle modification program. These personalized lifestyle medicine programs utilize a multidimensional approach to address chronic conditions.  Part of the Functional Medicine movement, targeted lifestyle components are used to improve health with the basic nutrigenomics tenets of healthier eating and regular exercise, with attention to stress management.  Incorporating specific protocols, they promote healthy body composition that ultimately modifies risks and effects from chronic conditions.

A stepwise approach for every condition begins with the basic belief that inadequate nutrition and lifestyle leads to altered body composition which leads to inappropriate cellular activity. After a comprehensive assessment, all programs include personalized interventions that primarily seek to optimize body composition with nutrition, physical activity, stress, and condition specific evaluation, and can be supported by medical foods and nutritional products targeting specific health issues. A standard 12 week educational guide anchors all programs to promote lasting behavior change and assist clients to find cost effective methods to eat healthy, be active, and manage stress.

Metagenics is one of the suppliers of medical foods and neutraceuticals utilized by the providers. Metagenics was founded in 1983 on a scientific concept: how the right nutrition could help people realize their best health possible by influencing their genes, “genetic potential through nutrition.” Today, this ever-growing and respected field of science is known as nutrigenomics. Healthcare organizations worldwide recommend “lifestyle medicine” to improve health with basic nutrigenomic tenets: healthier eating and regular exercise. Read More

Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest healing practices. Literally translated as, the science of life, lifestyle factors, especially nutrition is a key component as described in this ancient proverb: “Without proper diet, medicines are of no use. With proper diet, medicines are of no need.” Ayurveda defines specific lifestyle principles related to food intake, digestion, and personalized individual plans.

The BIA is a helpful analytical tool that enables the development of the nutrition and lifestyle plan to specifically meet the needs of the individual and to better assist them in attaining their goals. It is a better indicator of health and nutritional needs than anthropometric measurements alone. The body composition values, the resting metabolic rate figures and the fluid distribution measures enable the RD to develop a plan that better provides both the macronutrient and micronutrient needs.

"BIA is an important clinical tool for any clinician in evaluating the metabolic status of patients. It is inexpensive and noninvasive, and it provides useful information concerning altered body composition and membrane potential at the tissue level measured by phase angle."
