Professional Accreditation

COAPRTParks, Recreation and Tourism Management Program

Clemson University's Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT). COAPRT accredits baccalaureate programs in parks, recreation, tourism, sport management, event management, therapeutic recreation and leisure studies offered at regionally accredited institutions within the United States and its territories, and at nationally accredited institutions in Canada and Mexico. COAPRT is, in turn, accredited by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

COAPRT standard 2.05.05 requires reporting of aggregated results of learning outcomes assessment. Results for 2018-2019 follow:

Targets for all 7.0 series outcomes: 90 percent of students will pass a project/exam/assignment/exercise with a score of 70 percent or better.

  1. Students surpassed targets on the objective portion of the comprehensive final exam, with 96% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.
  2. Students surpassed targets on the written essay portion of the comprehensive final exam, with 97.3% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.
  3. Students surpassed targets on the oral portion of the comprehensive final exam, with 96.6% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.
  4. Students surpassed targets on an agency-based case study assignment, with 98.6% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.
  5. Students surpassed targets on a comprehensive written program plan project, with 92.5% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.
  6. Students surpassed targets on a program implementation exercise, with 94.6% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.
  7. Students surpassed targets on a program evaluation project, with 90.5% of students achieving a score of 70% or better.

COAPRT also requires students graduating from the program to demonstrate, through a comprehensive internship of not less than 400 clock hours and no fewer than 10 weeks, the potential to succeed as professionals at supervisory or higher levels in park, recreation, tourism, or related organizations. Results for spring and fall 2019 follow:

Target for PRTM 2060/2070 field experience: 90% of all students will complete 160 hours of PRTM 2060/2070 field experience:

  • Students surpassed this target for PRTM 2060 (97% student completion).
  • Students surpassed this target in PRTM 2070 (98% student completion).

Target for field experience evaluation: 80% of all students will receive an above average (4) or higher on all 9 professional dimensions required by our national accreditation body:

  • Students surpassed the 80% target on all 9 professional dimensions.

Please note that due to the COVID-19 disruption, an alternative internship experience was developed for students in Summer 2020 who's graduation plans would be disrupted by a delay in completing the regular 400-hour internship experience. Some students who were unable to secure an internship participated in an online seminar with industry professionals and faculty, and completed special projects for relevant agencies virtually or in an online format in lieu of a 400-hour internship. Participation in alternative internship experience is demarcated on their academic transcripts.

Important Information Regarding Degree Mills

In the United States, degrees and certificates from mills may not be acknowledged by other institutions when students seek to transfer or go to graduate school. Employers may not acknowledge degrees and certificates from degree mills when providing tuition assistance for continuing education. “Accreditation” from an accreditation mill can mislead students and the public about the quality of an institution. In the presence of degree mills and accreditation mills, students may spend a good deal of money and receive neither an education nor a useable credential." PGA Golf Management Program

Clemson University’s PGA Golf Management Program has been accredited by the PGA of America since 2001. This accreditation is evaluated every five years to ensure the program continues to meet PGA standards – and was last renewed in 2017. Learn more about PGA golf management university accreditation.

Recreational Therapy Program

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Recreational Therapy program is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Recreational Therapy Education (CARTE), through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Program curriculum was also designed to meet standards set by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). Students who complete the B.S. program will be eligible to sit for certification from the NCTRC to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).
