Associate Dean for Faculty Achievement and Strategic Initiatives

Dr. Douglas Hirt

Douglas Hirt assumed the role of associate dean for faculty achievement and strategic initiatives in February 2020. Formerly, he served as the associate dean for research and graduate studies. Hirt has been a member of the faculty in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering for more than 25 years and was the department chair between 2009 and 2016. He also serves as director of the Clemson-based NSF Engineering Research Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films.

Dr. Hirt completed his doctorate in chemical engineering at Princeton University followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in composite materials at NASA’s Langley Research Center.

Dr. Hirt’s research focuses, generally, on polymer films, examining the surface modification of polymer films by blending additives. He focuses on measuring the amount of additive exuded to the surface of a polymer film over time. His lab also focuses on chemically grafting various species to polymer films to carefully control the chemical functionality on the surface and to enhance the permanence and effectiveness of the surface modification. Recent work focuses on the modification and degradation of biobased polymers. Dr. Hirt is a fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
