When visiting websites or talking with apartment managers, students must make sure that they are aware of additional fees that may be charged in addition to rent.  These are usually one time fees to be paid before moving in.  Typically, these could include an application fee, administrative fee, and/or security deposit. Other fees may be charged at the discretion of apartment management.

Students will be asked to provide a record of at least one year of rental history.  Those who cannot provide at least one year of rental history may be required to pay one month’s rent in advance.  Almost all apartment complexes perform criminal background and credit checks on all potential occupants.  Housing can be denied to anyone who fails the background screening.

Finally, students need to inquire about which utility charges they will be responsible for. Sometimes complexes will include some utilities (cable, water, sewer or trash) in the rent. It is a student’s responsibility to ask about inclusions. Students do not have to purchase cable television service but they will have to pay for water, sewer, and trash if indicated by the apartment complex.
