Dee San

Dee C. San, MBA, BSN, RN is the Perioperative Quality and Safety Manager at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) where she provides leadership in cultivating a high-reliability safety culture across all MUSC perioperative care sites by identifying opportunities and strategies to reduce errors, improve quality outcomes, and enhance patient safety. Dee oversees Perioperative Services quality and safety reporting, analyses, and improvement efforts; provides leadership and guidance to ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements; and utilizes evidence-based methodologies in designing patient safety programs. She is the co-chair and content expert for MUSC’s Comprehensive Unit-Based Surgical Safety Program and co-chair of MUSC’s Perioperative Services Quality and Performance Improvement Committee. Dee’s research interest focuses on the integration of human factors methods in the perioperative environment to improve patient safety and outcomes. She is the principal investigator on the “Effect of Human Factors on OR Traffic Control and Associated Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI)” study currently in progress at MUSC. Dee has over 25 years of healthcare experience with a strong and in-depth background in analytics, quantitative and qualitative methods, project and change management, process and performance improvement, training and development, and facilitation of multidisciplinary teams across a variety of settings. She has led national and international engagements that focused on perioperative quality, safety, regulatory preparedness, work flow, and facility design. Dee has headed new product development efforts for healthcare consulting firms related to quantitative tools and measurement systems. Dee is Lean Six Sigma certified.
