Profile

Kristen Cuthrell, EdD, is a professor and the Department Chair in the Department of Human and Education Development. In this role, she supports faculty and students in the Literacy, Special Education, Counseling Education, and Learning Sciences programs. She is also a Clemson University Dean’s Fellow in Rural Education and Outreach. Dr. Cuthrell has served as a faculty member at Clemson University since 2024.

Prior to arriving at Clemson, Cuthrell served as director of the East Carolina University (ECU) Rural Education Institute in the College of Education and professor in the ECU’s Department of Elementary Education and Middle Grades Education. She was the acting state director for the North Carolina Rural Education Association, an affiliate of the National Rural Education Association and the Hub Liaison for the Southeast Regional Hub in the Rural Schools Collaborative. She received the ECU COE Diversity Award (2023) and the ECU 2024 Scholarship of Engagement Award. She has over $30 million in external funding and works tirelessly to support rural schools and communities.
