COVID-19 Testing Guidance for New Employees

Initial COVID-19 Testing Information for New Faculty and Staff

Welcome to Clemson University!

As we face the challenges presented by COVID-19, the overarching priority of Clemson’s operational plans is the health and safety of our students, staff, faculty and broader community.

Before reporting to work at any Clemson location, employees must satisfy Clemson's COVID-19 testing requirements.

  • Faculty and Staff must receive a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test via nasal, nasopharyngeal, throat or saliva taken within seven days prior to initially reporting to a Clemson location.

  • Student Workers follow guidance provided via student channels rather than the instructions below.

Employees assigned to work remotely 100 percent of the time do not have to meet the testing requirements and testing timelines listed above until they are required to report for on-site work.

Testing Options for Faculty and Staff

You have four options for satisfying Clemson’s COVID-19 pre-arrival requirements:

Testing on Main Campus. Testing is free for Clemson employees. If you are required to report to work in person at a Clemson location, take the following steps:

  1. After your hire request has been entered into the Office of Human Resources’ computing system, you will receive a welcome email from the Office of Human Resources providing the information (user ID and password) you’ll need to register for on-campus testing. You will also be issued an official Clemson University email account. If you do not have these login credentials on your first day of work, you and your supervisor should plan remote work activities until COVID test clearance is obtained.

  2. Register for a testing time slot.

  3. A QR code will be sent to your university email and texted to your smart phone. Retain this QR code, as the same QR code will be used for future testing.

  4. On your testing day, wear a mask and be sure to bring a government issued ID as well as your QR code (on a smart phone or printed out).

  5. Your test results will be texted and emailed to you—normally within 24 - 48 hours.

  6. You may only report to a University work site if you have received a negative test result.

  7. If you test positive, follow the instructions on the University’s COVID-19 Medical Guidance webpage.

Testing in the Greenville, SC Area. Please visit the Clemson COVID-19 Testing Information webpage and select “Get Tested – Greenville” for testing opportunities in the Greenville, SC area. If none of the options are suitable based on your expected start date, you might ask your supervisor about local testing options or utilize the DHEC testing location information on the Clemson COVID-19 Testing Information webpage. You may also obtain a test on your own (reference option 4 below).

Employee testing throughout the state. If you are assigned to a non-main campus Clemson location, you may want to ask your supervisor about local testing options. Clemson may have upcoming testing events at or near your expected work location. Additionally, you may find local testing options by visiting the Clemson COVID-19 Testing Information webpage, which includes information on DHEC’s available testing locations around the state.

Testing on your own. Newly hired faculty and staff may obtain a non-Clemson affiliated COVID-19 test. Any costs associated with a test obtained on your own are your responsibility and will not be reimbursed by the University. There are both free and paid testing options available. Ensure the type of test you select meets the University’s testing requirements as outlined on the University’s COVID-19 Testing Information webpage. You must upload your test results using the instructions below:

  • Upload your test results to the COVID-19 Test Result Upload Tool by using the Clemson user login link (and your Clemson user credentials emailed to you from the Office of Human Resources), and notify your supervisor of your results. If you do not have these login credentials on your first day of work, you and your supervisor should plan remote work activities until COVID test clearance can be obtained.

    1. You may only report to a University work site if you test negative for COVID-19, have uploaded your test results and obtained clearance.

    2. If you test positive, follow the instructions on the University’s COVID-19 Medical Guidance webpage.

If you have questions about test results, the COVID-19 Test Result Upload tool or exemptions from the testing requirement, contact the COVID-19 Systems Support Team at covidsystemssupport@clemson.edu or 864-656-8714.

Again, welcome to Clemson. Learn more about Clemson's commitment to the health of our community by visiting the Healthy Clemson: United as Tigers website. More information about the continued employee testing requirements is available on the University’s COVID-19 Testing Information webpage.
