Allan DeToma provides data analyses and reporting and marketing support for Clemson Online. This includes performing analyses pertaining to finance, marketing, research, and student retention, demographics, and success, as well as capacity planning for growth in programs that are served by Clemson Online.
Allan is responsible for supporting the goals, functions, and services of Clemson Online by providing informed data-driven decision support. This support is accomplished through data collection, data mining, simulation, trend analysis, forecasting, and other complex statistical analyses. In addition, he presents the results of any analysis to the stakeholders through the development and generation of reports. He also serves as the Clemson Online repository for department-specific data.
In terms of marketing, Allan serves as a liaison with University and external marketing services. He analyzes marketing research results and informs decisions about the expenditure of advertising dollars, while also assisting with the planning and deployment of marketing campaigns.
Allan comes to Clemson University from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he worked for two years as a biostatistician for the Biostatistics Shared Resource group under the Hollings Cancer Center. He collaborated on several clinical trial studies and other projects while also contributing to the statistical methods sections of many grants.
Prior to joining MUSC, Allan was an educator at Pinewood Preparatory School. There, he taught a variety of high school math courses and served as Chair of the Mathematics Department. He also re-established the AP Statistics program, which had become defunct due to not having a qualified instructor. Teaching this course eventually led him to pursue a graduate degree in statistics, which he obtained through a distance learning program. This experience helped him understand the importance of having quality online courses and programs.
Allan loves spending time with his wife, Lori, and their two daughters, Rebekah and Kayla. His extended family includes three dogs (Buddy, Presley, and Watson) and 2 cats (Charlie and Patch). He considers himself a dog man, but supposes that the cats are okay, too.
Allan has a passion for sports, especially Clemson football and baseball. Being a sports nerd, he works on developing models to help predict the outcome of football games (both real and fantasy) for fun. He likes exercise, primarily in the form of riding around in a cart attempting to play golf. He also enjoys relaxing in my spare time by reading a variety of books and counts Stephen King and Matthew Kelly among his favorites.
