Studio Appalachia: A Collaborative Project Based Design Studio

Clemson Collaborations in Service-Learning Webcast
, December 6, 2012

Studio Appalachia is a collaborative project based graduate design studio between the school of architecture and the department of landscape architecture. The Studio is directed by associate professor Dan Harding and assistant professor Paul Russell, both service learning fellows at Clemson University. This collaborative endeavor targets key issues associated with the orientation and accessibility to natural resources, sustainable building strategies, and approaches to long term visioning and planning. The nature of design+build community projects mandates a collective dialogue relating to social, economic, and environmental factors. Through rigorous research, stakeholder engagement, and visceral methods student design teams plan, design, and demonstrate best practice strategies and design approaches to address and fulfill community needs. This webinar will focus on several current Studio projects under construction in the distinctive portion of Appalachia in the upstate of South Carolina and will discuss the core foundation of the collaboration between disciplines, faculty, students, and the inevitable and reciprocal working relationship between the students and community.

Clemson Collaborations in Service-Learning Webcast

Clemson University Collaborations in Service-Learning is sponsored by the Clemson Service Alliance. The Service Alliance promotes the use of community service and service-learning by Clemson faculty in classes with both undergraduate and graduate students in all major disciplinary areas. The Collaborations radio webcasts are an opportunity to hear from some of our Clemson Service Alliance Faculty Fellows, their students, and their community partners about  service-learning projects around the state of S.C., and to learn about the impact of these service-learning projects on the community and on student learning outcomes.  In 2012- 2013, we will be focusing on service –learning classes in five different disciplinary areas:  Planning and Landscape Architecture, English, Languages, Teacher Education, and Nursing. Thank you for participating, and we hope that service-learning practitioners in both K-12 and higher education will find these workshops very helpful in the course development, implementation, and evaluation process.
