W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society

DuBois logoThe Clemson University Chapter of the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society honors the memory of Dr. W.E.B. DuBois by promoting the pursuit of academic excellence in all fields of higher education, engaging the community of scholars in service to others, and recognizing the outstanding achievements of the society's members.

The first chapter in the national organization was founded at Florida State University (FSU) in 1991. In 2005, through the initiative of Dr. Karen Laughlin, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at FSU, members of the local society, faculty and staff came together with the purpose of creating a national office for the W.E.B. DuBois Honor Society and establishing chapters at other institutions.

The Clemson Chapter members will engage with each other and the Clemson University community through the following areas:

  • Service. Members will be expected to engage in service opportunities within the City of Clemson and surrounding areas to create positive change in communities.

  • Social Engagement. Social engagement may include member potlucks, game/trivia nights, cultural excursions, local festivals and on-campus events.

  • Academic Excellence Seminars. The hosting of seminars will provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to engage with students to discuss cultural experiences, current event topics, academic lectures and personal or professional development.

  • Philanthropy. Similar to the use of service as a way to give back to communities, the organization will engage in fundraising activities and provide donations to a non-profit of its choosing, as well as support organizations that aide others in moments of emergency situations.

DuBois Honor Society is led by a team of undergraduates, a staff adviser and a graduate student adviser.
