    If you teach a General Education course, the faculty have indicated that this course includes material enabling students to meet one or more competencies in General Education. To assist students in focusing on the competencies, you should include in your syllabus an indication of what class activities (whether graded or ungraded) specifically address the competencies. In most cases, these are activities that are already in the syllabus, and you need only direct student attention to them.

    Remember: It is your responsibility to make sure that if your course enables students to demonstrate that they have attained the competency as stated in the Undergraduate Announcements.

    If your class tends to use traditional exams, consider assigning a new applications-oriented “capstone” assignment for students to do in preparation for the final exam. This does not necessarily need to be graded in detail, it is for the benefit of the student to connect the semesters work and reflect on their learning in the course and they can use it in their ePortfolio to demonstrate one or more General Education competencies. You can grade it in a binary fashion — a quick scan can reveal whether the student has or not presented sufficiently content-based material.

Undergraduate Committees

The Council on Undergraduate Studies recommends to the Academic Council all policy matters which originate with it, from the colleges, the Faculty Senate, the Student Senate or form the various subcommittees that report to it.

  • Undergraduate Curriculum Committee

    The University Curriculum Committees act for the faculty in reviewing all proposals for curricular changes, and recommends such changes to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The Undergraduate and Graduate Curriculum Committees shall have jurisdiction over undergraduate and graduate matters respectively.

  • Academic Advising Committee

    Oversees coordination of University activities (including college academic advising centers, academic support center, colleges, etc.); information advisors of current policies on advising; periodically reviews the mission of academic advising; coordinates assessments of the University advising system; and provides professional development for advisors.

  • Summer Reading Advisory Committee

    Recommends to the Provost and the President of the University one or more selections of a book for the Freshman Summer Reading Program, as well as suggesting related themes for that year’s Presidential Colloquium.
