Digital Signatures

In concert with other conservation efforts at Clemson University, University Facilities supports the practice of signing electronic documents (PDF) using digital signatures.  Our organization uses self-signed ids containing public-key cryptography as the basis for creating and managing digital signatures using Adobe Reader, available at Adobe's website as a free download.

This tutorial includes specific instructions for Adobe Reader X and Adobe Reader XI.  If you are using a previous version, please upgrade to lessen any confusion with the screenshots below.  You can use Adobe Acrobat if you prefer, just note that some of the instructions may vary due to dissimilarities between Reader and Acrobat's drop-down menus.

    Step 1
    1. Open Adobe Reader
    Step 2
    2. Open Preferences
    Step 3
    3. Select Signatures, click More
    Step 4
    4. Click Add ID
    Step 5
    5. Select "...a new digital ID..."
    Step 6
    6. Select Windows Certificate Store
    Step 7
    7. Fill in the first four fields
    Step 8
    8. Close Security Settings window

    Step 1
    1. Open Adobe Reader
    Step 2
    2. Open Security Settings
    Step 3
    3. Add a new ID
    Step 4
    4. Choose to create a new ID
    Step 5
    5. Select Windows Certificate Store
    Step 6
    6. Fill in the first four fields

    7. Close Security Settings window
