Prof. Kokkolaras holds a Dipl.-Ing. (Univ.) degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Technical University of Munich and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Rice University.

Before joining CU-ICAR, he was a tenured (Full) Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University, where he also served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Faculty of Engineering.

Prof. Kokkolaras’s academic interests lie in the broad area of computational engineering design and include multidisciplinary, derivative-free, and Bayesian optimization; multi-fidelity model management and digital twins; automated machine learning and generative models; requirements management for systems engineering; verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification in design; systems of systems, platform-based product families, and product-service systems; applications in transportation (automotive and aerospace), energy, and medicine. He has co-authored 85 peer-reviewed journal publications, 4 editorials, 5 book chapters, and 76 conference papers.

Prof. Kokkolaras has been elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and has served in numerous leadership positions. Among other recognitions, he is the recipient of the 2023 ASME Design Automation Award and the 2008 University of Michigan College of Engineering Outstanding Research Scientist Award.

Prof. Kokkolaras has previously served as member of the ASME Engineering Design Division Executive Committee (Publications Chair), elected Member of the Advisory Board of the Design Society, Chair of the ASME Executive Design Automation Committee, Conference and Program Chair of the ASME Design Automation Conference, Program co-Chair of the International Conference on Engineering Design, and Associate Editor for five journals, notably the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design (on whose Advisory Board he serves currently), Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization (Springer), and Optimization and Engineering (Springer).
