Dr. Matthias J. Schmid is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering at Clemson University, Greenville, SC. Previously, he was appointed Research Associate Professor in the Department of Automotive Engineering at Clemson University. He received an intermediate degree in electrical engineering and economics from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, in 2001, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace engineering from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, Amherst, NY, USA in 2009 and 2017. During his career, he also served in various roles with the German Air Force and M. J. Schneider GmbH, Cochem, Germany.

Dr. Schmid’s research focuses on the foundations of modeling, estimation, and control of dynamic systems with a particular emphasis on uncertainty. He applies his research within various application domains, including space applications, robotics, autonomous systems, vehicles, and mobility. He has received significant funding from federal and state agencies as well as industry sources.

Dr. Schmid served as a faculty adviser in vehicle dynamics and control for the Deep Orange 12 project, which focused on enabling high-speed (180mph) on-road autonomy, as well as the faculty co-lead for the Deep Orange 13 and 14 projects targeting high-speed off-road tracked autonomous mobility. He is one of the principal investigators in Clemson’s Virtual Prototyping of Ground Systems (VIPR-GS) Center, a $100 million defense research collaboration with the United States Army DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center.

Dr. Schmid has received several accolades for his work, including Best Paper Awards, the Howard Strauss Award from the University at Buffalo, and fellowships from the German National Scholarship Foundation. His professional affiliations include the German Academic International Network (advisory board member from 2018-2024), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
