Current cervical collars for children don’t meet the immobilization requirements to prevent further injury after trauma to the cervical spine. Foam collars don’t provide the necessary stabilization while rigid collars don’t properly fit the anatomy of a child. Therefore, emergency medical technicians and physicians need a way to quickly and effectively stabilize the cervical spine of patients ages 6-12 to prevent further injury after trauma.
The Pediatric Inflatable Cervical Collar (PICC) is a novel device for emergency cervical spine stabilization for children ages 6-12. The design implements a rigid chin support with an adjustable height mechanism along with an inflatable air bladder to mold to the patient’s individual anatomy.
