Dr. Ren received a B.S. degree in Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering at Dalian University of Technology in 2013. He received his M.S. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Syracuse University in 2015. In 2020, he received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Northeastern University. Starting from August 2020, he joins as an Assistant Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clemson University.

Research
Dr. Ren’s current research interests center around high-performance and energy-efficient deep learning systems. The enormous number of weight parameters and computations of DNN models require resource-rich devices, and the ever-increasing model size further impedes the deployment of DNNs in resource-constrained devices. To overcome this hurdle, his group focuses on DNN model compression algorithms to reduce the volume of parameters and computations, through techniques such as pruning, quantization, and distillation. Meanwhile, his group also works on accelerator architectures, including conventional CMOS-based and emerging technologies-based accelerators. His other interests include neural architecture search, multimodal learning, small data learning, computer architecture, and ASIC design.
