Having held senior engineering positions from 1994 to 2000 in industry and having been an educator since 2000, Dr. Chowdhury has been involved in the practice, education and research of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).  As a former senior engineer for Iteris, Inc. and Bellomo-McGee, Inc. (BMI) in Virginia, Dr. Chowdhury led numerous projects related to the planning, design and evaluation of ITS for state and federal agencies. While in the industry he supported the USDOT‘s ITS Metro Model Deployment Initiatives (MMDI) as the evaluation coordinator.  In May 2010, Dr. Chowdhury was selected to receive the IDEaS professorship of the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences at Clemson University. He was also selected as the Eugene Douglas Mays Professor of Transportation Engineering in 2010 in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering at Clemson University.

Dr. Chowdhury’s primary research focus in ITS is the applications for connected vehicles and infrastructure for real-time traffic and energy management. His research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Transportation, state transportation agencies and university transportation centers. He is the former chair of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Committee on Computing in Transportation, was elected to the IEEE ITS Society Board of Governors in 2010, and is an ASCE Fellow.  Dr. Chowdhury is an associate editor of the IEEE Transaction on Intelligent Transportation Systems and the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. He also serves as an editorial board member for the Journal of Transportation Security, and has published two textbooks and two book chapters on ITS.
