Dr. Rhyne began work at Michelin’s research and development center in Greenville in 1978 in the machine design group.  He started to work in tire development in 1986, primarily designing replacement market tire lines and introducing new technology in Michelin tires.  By 1996, he was working in tire research exclusively.  For the last 16 years he has worked with a team conceiving and developing new concepts in mobility.  That task has led to the invention non-pneumatic wheels or Tweels.

He received his BS and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University. He is an adjunct professor at Clemson University ICAR (International Center for Automotive Research) where he teaches a graduate class in tire mechanics.  He has received four best paper awards from the Tire Society and is an associate editor for the journal, Tire Science and Technology.  He was honored to give the plenary lecture for the Tire Society Conference.  Dr. Rhyne holds numerous patents in tire technology and has published many papers on tire related subjects.

Dr. Rhyne is an automotive enthusiast. His collection includes a C6 Corvette and a 1965 Chevy C10 pickup with a 6.0 liter LS2 engine.  Currently he is driving a Honda Civic SI, (first non GM vehicle) with Tweels.
