Department Chair Search

Clemson University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering. The Department seeks exceptional candidates with a strong track record of (1) high quality research and scholarship supported by federal, state, and/or industry funding; (2) demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching; and (3) proven leadership/mentorship experience and a commitment to inclusion and diversity.

The Civil Engineering Department is at the forefront of exciting advances in research and education. This includes a 2017 NSF grant for Revolutionizing Engineering Departments (RED) – one of only 18 in engineering and computer science departments nationally. The grant is focused on developing a departmental culture of creativity, adaptability, and innovation fostered by concepts from complexity leadership theory. The department also leads the Center for Connected Multimodal Mobility (C²M²), which is a U.S. Department of Transportation Tier 1 University Transportation Center. C²M² is an innovation center transforming multimodal mobility through connectivity, data analytics, and automation research. Furthermore, the department is home to five endowed professorships. Currently, the department is completing our first year of a groundbreaking restructuring of the department backed by $2 million from the National Science Foundation. The goal of NSF RED is to develop a well functioning department with a focus on student success in attaining professional formation as engineers. Our motivation is to promote creativity and intellectual excitement while enlightening and empowering our students. Our RED program consists of three tactics: curriculum transformation, department culture transformation, and transfer of knowledge.
The Department Chair is an integral part of administering the endowment and the NSF Red Grant. The chair position will support value shared governance, support to undergraduate teaching, promoting professional engineering, and collected efficacy.

In 2017, Clemson was awarded a Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC) by the United States Department of Transportation, We are delighted to showcase the efforts of our multi-disciplinary, multi-campus collaboration as the University Center for Connected Multimodal Mobility (C2M2). We are advancing towards our vision to be “an innovation center for transforming multimodal mobility through connectivity, data analytics, and automation.”

Department Data:

  • The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Currently there are 350 undergraduates in the sophomore through senior ranks, 49 M.S. students and 62 Ph.D. students.
  • The Department has 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and five endowed professorships.
  • The department has and engaged alumni base and external advisory board.
  • Since 2016 the faculty in the Department have received two NSF CAREER Awards
  • The graduate school is ranked in the top 40 in public universities
  • The college of engineering, computing and applied sciences is ranked in the top 30 nationally
  • The Department has 59,664 ft2 on-campus space including undergraduate laboratories and 34,539 sq2 off campus research laboratories.
