An undergraduate student research experience where students from diverse science and engineering focused programs come to Clemson University for a 10 week summer program to work in state of the art laboratories in Clemson’s Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies (COMSET).

This program was named for the late Dr. Charles H. Townes, recipient of the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of the maser (the predecessor to the laser), who is an alumnus of Furman University (1935) and Clemson (honoris causa, 1963). Students accepted into this summer program are the recipients of:

  • 10 weeks on Clemson’s campus with housing, parking and bus service throughout the area
  • Room & board and a $3500 stipend
  • Opportunity to meet other students at Clemson doing summer programs from around the world; while working with Clemson students
  • Vast alumni network
  • Group lunches and activities with the program
  • Help with presentations and write ups to create a poster for an end-of-summer conference
  • Potential for publishing peer-reviewed papers
  • Assistance with preparing for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
  • Hands-on equipment use including:
    • Electron microscopes (SEM & TEM)
    • Optical draw tower and lathe
    • Extensive absorbance and fluorescence spectrometers
    • Wet chemistry and organic synthesis
    • Thermo-analysis characterization equipment
    • Electronic device (OLED, photovoltaic, memory) fabrication & testing glove box
