Santee Delta
This 5-year collaborative, non-invasive research project will study and document the Santee Delta’s historic cultural resources. The Delta was a major center of rice production during the 18th and 19th centuries as Lowcountry planters and their Carolina Gold Rice emerged as a staple crop in global markets. This study takes an integrated landscape approach which combines architectural documentation and spatial mapping contained within a comprehensive GIS database. More broadly, this project will bring about a better understanding of the interface between natural and historic cultural resources in the Delta and provide the means for more holistic land management practices in the Santee.
