A Framework for Creative Inquiry in the Industrial Engineering Curriculum

Description

The Department formally integrates problem-based learning into its undergraduate curriculum through a set of two courses in system design: Systems Design I and II. Systems Design I introduces the product development process and user-centered methodologies for designing engineering systems; Systems Design II is the capstone design course. In Systems Design I, design methodologies are introduced in the context of a design process that includes identifying user needs. Students experience this process as members of teams, in a semester-long design project, working with a client. Clients are typically on campus; recent clients include University Housing, the Cooperative Education Office and Campus Recreation. In Systems Design II, students experience the challenge of integrating and synthesizing their engineering knowledge (as members of teams) in the creative solution of a real-world, open-ended problem posed by a client. In contrast to the first design course, clients are typically off campus; recent clients include BMW, Michelin, Milliken and Caterpillar.
