Two Brookes Rifle cannons and one Dahlgren cannon, each weighing between 9,000 – 15,000lbs, were excavated from the Pee Dee River and brought to the WLCC for conservation in 2015. The cannons, lost in the scuttling of the CSS Pee Dee, were submerged in brackish water for more than 150 years and required deconcretion and desalination before they could be dried for display. After nearly 3 years soaking in solutions of sodium hydroxide, the cannons were able to be dried and coated for display at the Florence VA.
