Ending or Extending Your Program
J-1 Program Extensions
- Program extensions are only permitted under the conditions below:
- There is time remaining under your J-1 category limits.
- You have not been approved for a waiver of the 212(e) requirement.
- Your application is submitted to International Services prior to your J-1 program end-date.
- To request an extension, please work with your hosting department to submit the Extension Request prior to your DS-2019 program end-date.
Completing Your Program
- All J-1 exchange visitors and their J-2 dependents are granted a 30-day grace period to depart the U.S. following the DS-2019 program end-date.
Completing Your Program Earlier Than Expected
- If your program will end more than 15 days before the end-date listed on your DS-2019, please submit the IS-90 Departure Verification Form to International Services so your SEVIS record can be adjusted. You will have a 30-day grace period to depart the U.S. following your new program end-date.
- If you are completing your program due to status change, please also submit the IS-90 Departure Verification Form so we can make the necessary changes to your record.
Transferring to a New Program Sponsor
- All J-1 exchange visitors are eligible to transfer their status to a new employer or school so long as they meet the conditions below:
- Program objectives will remain consistent at the new institution.
- There will be no gap between institutions.
- The new program will not exceed the maximum program duration permitted by the J-1 category.
- The J-1 SEVIS record is still in active status.
- To initiate the transfer process, please submit the transfer-out request at least 30 days prior to the requested transfer release date.
