In-State Swine Movement Requirements

Transport of Live Swine without Identification Prohibited.

It is unlawful to transport live swine on public roads or waterways within South Carolina unless the swine have either:

An official form of identification approved by the State Veterinarian

Official identification includes:

  • USDA Official Eartags: Imprinted with Official Eartag US Shield and a nationally unique official animal identification number. Tags include:
    • National Uniform Eartagging System (NUES) metal ear tags
      National Uniform Eartagging System (NUES) metal ear tags
    • Official Animal Identification Number (AIN) or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags
      Official Animal Identification Number (AIN) or Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags
  • USDA backtags allowed for moving directly to slaughter, but not allowed for exhibition
Are accompanied by documents that may be presented instead of an official form of identification. Acceptable documents include:
  • A dated bill of lading
  • An invoice
  • A receipt
  • A bill of sale
  • Fair registration documentation
  • Documentation created by the producer showing:
    • Quantity of swine to be sold or transported
    • The name of the wholesale producer or dealer from whom the live swine were purchased and received.

Transport of Swine Taken from the Wild Prohibited

It is unlawful to import, possess, buy, sell, offer for sale, transfer, or transport a live member of the family Suidae (pig) taken from the wild, release a live member of the family Suidae (pig) into the wild.

Each pig that is imported, bought, sold, offered for sale, possessed, transferred, transported, or released in violation of this section constitutes a separate offense.

A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, is subject to the penalty prescribed in South Carolina Code of Laws, Section 47-4-130. Each violation constitutes a separates offense.
