Professor Sturkie was first licensed as a marriage, family, and child counselor in California almost 35 years ago and practiced full-time as a child and family therapist for several years before joining the Clemson faculty in 1982. He is currently serving as an Interim Associate Dean in the College of Business and Behavioral Science. He previously served nine years as the Chair of the Department of Sociology & Anthropology and two and one half years as Interim Chair of the Department of Political Science. He is also a former President of the Clemson University Faculty Senate. Professor Sturkie has received several major professional recognitions during his career including the Outstanding Contribution to Marital and Family Therapy Award presented by the American Association for Marital and Family Therapy (2000) and the Clemson University Class of 1939 Award for Faculty Excellence (2003). Other activities have included service as the Chair of the Advisory Committee for the National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy and as a member of the S.C. State Board of Examiners for MFTs & LPCs. He continues to be affiliated with the National Exam program in Marital and Family Therapy, and during 2012 is working on a new role dileniation study that should result in the exam being used by aspiring practitioners in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.
