Dustin Gravley

DUSTIN GRAVLEY is a Lab Technologist and Assistant Shop Manager in the Machining and Technical Services' Machine Shop. He regularly consults with faculty, students, and staff to assist them with the machining, 3D modeling, and design needs of their research.

PROJECTS

LIGNIN PROJECT: Machined components for the Lignin project, which examined how a waste byproduct from the paper manufacturing industry could be converted into a useable source of energy - Dr. Mark Thies, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

DOE WASTE PROJECT: Aided in the design and machined multiple titanium diffusion cells that are used in testing underground storage methods for radioactive wastes on an intermediate scale in real-world conditions for the Department Of Energy - Dr. Brian Powell- Nuclear Environmental Engineering and Science

FORMULA SAE RACECAR: Machined parts for the Clemson University Formula SAE racecar, which students design and build for a competition in the spring – College Of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences

INNEGRA-BASED COMPOSITES: Worked closely with Clemson’s Bioengineering and packaging science researchers to design and machine fixtures for evaluating whether Innegra-based composites could provide superior head protection to athletes involved in contact sports – Dr. Gregory Batt and Dr. John DesJardins, Packaging Science and Bioengineering

  • Advanced knowledge of programming, operation, and setup of CNC mills and lathes to manufacture complex academic and industry-related research projects
  • Create part models, technical drawings, and assemblies using Solid Works and AutoCAD
  • Consults with engineers on design changes and machining practices to benefit the manufacturability of the products
  • Skilled in the operation of manual lathe, manual mill, Blanchard grinder, laser engraver, MIG welder, fabrication equipment, & heat-treating furnaces with the ability to hold tolerances of .0001
