Clemson Model UN and CIRA

Clemson Model UN and CIRA at The Clemson University Department of Political Science Clemson University students from a variety of majors participate in inter-collegiate competitions in the U.S. and abroad simulating the proceedings of the United Nations as well as international crises. Clemson Model UN delegations have won successive domestic and international awards going back to 1989. Students can choose to either enroll in a special political science course (POSC 3110) to provide one credit hour for participation in the program or join a student organization to participate. Aside from regular competitions and activities, members organize and run a Model UN competition for high schools (CUMUNC).

The Clemson University Model United Nations Conference (CUMUNC) provides high school students with the opportunity to engage in exciting debate about topics of international importance. Students represent United Nations Member States in committees that simulate the work of real-world UN bodies. CUMUNC 2018 will be held from October 12-14, 2018 at Clemson University.

This year, CUMUNC is proud to host four conference committees, providing students with a range of skill and experience with the opportunity to debate challenging topics. This year’s committees and topics are:
United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) - Skill level: Beginner

  • Strengthening Field Support for the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations
  • Preventing the Use of Children in Armed Conflict

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) - Skill level: Beginner-Intermediate

  • Considering the Impact of Rising Sea Levels on Environmental Migrants
  • Preventing Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trafficking

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) - Skill level: Beginner-Intermediate

  • Promoting Trade and Development for Landlocked Countries
  • Diversifying Economies

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Crisis Committee - Skill level: Intermediate-Advanced

  • Ending Biological Warfare
  • Resolving the North Korean Nuclear Crisis

CUMUNC 2018 is located at Clemson University. Delegations interested in staying at the official conference hotel for a special rate of $99/night should contact the University Inn and Conference Center as soon as possible to book rooms for the weekend of the conference.

Clemson International Relations Association (CIRA)

CIRA is a student organization housed in the political science department for promoting and carrying out international relations activities across campus. Activities include organizing roundtables and talks on current international affairs topics and coordinating with other internationally oriented student groups on campus.
