Effective treatment for clients who have eating disorders involves a multidisciplinary approach where professionals from many health-related disciplines meet regularly with these clients. Our treatment team includes medical doctors, psychologists, nutritionists and counselors who meet weekly to coordinate the care of all clients who present with eating disorders and consent to medical, psychological and/or nutritional treatment. Services include individual and group psychotherapy, nutritional counseling and regular medical evaluations from professionals who have interest and/or expertise in working with eating disorders.
Outpatient treatment can be quite effective, but in some cases clients might need inpatient services to ensure their health and safety and to recover optimally. The team evaluates the progress of eating-disordered clients weekly and makes such recommendations when appropriate. The team can consult with other professionals and family members of the client only with the written permission of the client, as mandated by law. Should the team recommend that a client pursue inpatient treatment, we will be glad to assist the client by providing appropriate inpatient treatment referrals.
Counseling and Psychological Services offers testing for learning disorders and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder on a limited, first-come-first-served basis. Depending on the test battery, the cost of the evaluations ranges from $325 to $504. The number of evaluations conducted depends on the number of professional staff available that semester.
If a student is interested in being tested for either a learning disorder or ADHD in order to receive accommodations from Clemson’s Student Disability Services; obtain accommodations on a nationally standardized test such as the GRE, LSAT or Praxis; or gain access to appropriate ADHD medications; the student should come to CAPS as soon after 8 a.m. as possible on the first day of classes to arrange for an evaluation appointment. Appointments must be made in person. For more information about other ADHD-related services, consult the following link: www.clemson.edu/campus-life/campus-services/redfern/resources/add-adhd.html.
If the student fails to keep the initial appointment without notifying CAPS, that person will be dropped from the queue, and the evaluation opportunity will be given to the next available student.
Once the testing battery has been determined, usually during the second meeting, the full fee for the service will be due before actual testing will begin. CAPS does not file insurance, but Redfern provides documentation to send to your insurance carrier. Once the evaluation has been written, the student will meet with the evaluator for a complete explanation of the findings. If the student meets the criteria for a learning disorder and/or ADHD, two copies of the evaluation will be provided to the student: one for student files and one for SDS.
CAPS is committed to educating students about mental health issues so that they can make informed decisions about their lives and know when to seek additional help. We believe that sharing and discussing mental health topics with students enhances academic success, lifelong learning, autonomy, relationships and personal growth. In addition, we offer outreach services to faculty and staff members in order to improve the quality of their interactions with students and to promote a healthy work environment. We offer outreach presentations on a wide variety of topics, many of which are listed below. Campus organizations are encouraged to call CAPS if they would like to learn more about any mental health topic, even if it is not listed below. We will be glad to arrange a presentation that meets the organization’s needs.
