Dr. Luzinov received a M. S. degree in Chemical Engineering and Technology in 1985 and a Ph. D. degree in Polymer Chemistry in 1990 from Lviv Polytechnic Institute (Ukraine). Prior to joining the faculty of Clemson University, he served as a Senior Research Scientist at Physical Chemistry Institute (National Academy of Science of Ukraine), NATO Research Fellow at Center Education and Research on Macromolecules (University of Liege, Belgium) and Postdoctoral Research Associate at Iowa State and Western Michigan Universities.


The research program of the group is focused on fundamental and applied research problems in nanofabrication of thin polymer films and their utilization for multi-component polymer systems. The main goals of the program are to:

  • develop the synthetic approaches that will enable us to build submicron polymer films with desired structure and properties;
  • determine correlation between the structure and properties of the films;
  • utilize the synthesized layers for interfacial modification of traditional polymer systems and generation of new materials for advanced applications.

Among the applications of the films are:

  • functionalization of the surfaces and interfaces;
  • surface modification of fiber and textile materials;
  • interfacial modification of polymer blends, composites and layered structures;
  • fabrication of nanocomposite thin films;
  • molecular lubrication;
  • regulation of adhesion;
  • protective coatings;
  • regulation of the surface wettability;
  • colloid stabilization of particles and pigments;
  • biocompatibility.
