Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a technology that can fabricate a physical object directly from digital data, usually in a layer-by-layer way. In Stereolithography (SL) based AM processes, the photopolymer-based liquid resin solidifies when the input energy exceeds a threshold. In spite of the recent advances in AM, some challenges remain, including the stair-stepping effect, the dilemma between build speed and resolution, limited materials and sizes. To achieve enhanced performance, energy control and material deposition play critical roles in AM systems. In this talk, I will present some of my recent research in addressing such challenges. First, I will present a controlled meniscus method based on fluid dynamics and an optimization method for minimizing the approximation error and build time. Substantially improved surface finish has been demonstrated in experimental verifications. Secondly, I will present a novel AM process that can provide an order of magnitude faster building speed. In addition to the surface finish and build speed, I will briefly introduce a new integrated layerless AM process for future applications such as building-around-inserts. Finally, I will discuss my future research plans and share my thoughts on how I could contribute to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University.
Ms. Yayue (Anna) Pan is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). She is expected to receive her Ph.D. in May, 2014. Her research interests include additive manufacturing (3D Printing), Computer-aided Design (CAD)/design methodology, process control and modeling, and innovative product and systems development. She recently worked as a Research Engineer at 3D Systems Inc., a leading company in 3D Printing industry. During her graduate school years, she actively participated in various international research conferences. Some of her recent awards include an Outstanding Paper Award in the SME 41st annual North American Manufacturing Research Conferences (NAMRC) in 2013, a Honorable Mention Paper Award in the 8th International Conference on MicroManufacturing (ICOMM) in 2013, a Best Paper Award in the ASME annual Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC) in 2012, and a Student Research Presentation Award in the SME 40th annual North American Manufacturing Research Conferences (NAMRC) in 2012.
