This program utilizes an experiential and theory-to-practice model emphasizing development, prevention, and intervention. The program areas are designed to provide challenging, yet supportive environments that promote professional orientation, commitment to inquiry, and self-awareness.

Educational Specialist Degree Program in Counselor Education
Thank you for your interest in the 30-credit Educational Specialist (EdS) degree program in Counselor Education at Clemson University. The EdS degree in Counselor Education is designed for individuals who already possess a master’s degree in counseling and who seek to further their knowledge and skills in counseling. Students entering this program must choose either a school counseling emphasis or a mental health counseling emphasis.
Most students will complete the program on a part-time basis, taking 1 or 2 classes per semester, including summers. All students must complete the program in six years. Courses are taught in the evenings, Monday through Thursday, at 4:30 or later at either the University Center in Greenville or on Clemson’s campus.
EdS School Counseling Emphasis
Individuals choosing this emphasis typically are interested either in completing requirements for school counseling certification or in advancing their knowledge and skills in school counseling to be eligible for salaries at the master’s +30/EdS pay rate. Students choosing this emphasis must complete a minimum of 30 credits, choosing courses as follows:
EdS Mental Health Counseling Emphasis
Individuals choosing this emphasis typically are interested either in completing requirements for counselor licensure (i.e., LPC) or in advancing their knowledge and skills in mental health counseling. Students in this track must complete 30 credits, choosing courses as follows:
Applications to the EdS in Counselor Education program are due February 1

Application files that are complete will be screened, and individuals who pass the initial screening will be invited to an interview. Helpful Tips for Applicants:
The counselor education program faculty seeks to admit a diverse applicant pool, and we review applicant files comprehensively. The applicant pool varies from year to year, so it is not possible for us to convey specifics regarding average test scores or other factors. We do not guarantee admission into the EdS program, and we have a limited number of openings each year.
Our goal is to bring in advanced graduate students who have the potential to excel in graduate school and in their field. Strong applicants have competitive academic profiles (GPA and GRE scores) and possess good analytical thinking skills (e.g., analytical writing section of the GRE). Further, strong applicants will be able to articulate a clear vision for why they want to seek advanced training in counseling and how they envision using their new knowledge and skills. Finally, we believe that counselors must be leaders and advocates, possess effective counseling skills, value collaboration, and be able to work effectively with diverse populations. As such, we also look for individuals who have demonstrated leadership skills as well as an ability to work well with others and a desire to become culturally competent.
We prefer to see recommendation letters from professionals who can comment on applicants’ strengths and skills as counselors as well as their leadership potential. Supervisors and colleagues make for good references, while friends and former clients do not.
The EdS program in Counselor Education requires completion of 30 credit hours relevant to their specific emphasis (see below). Students are required to meet with their assigned adviser before enrolling in any course. Students may transfer in up to 12 graduate credits from an accredited institution, if approved by the student's advisor. Transfer courses must meet the requirements of a Clemson graduate course and have been taken within six years from the date the EdS degree will be awarded.

Please see the Financial Aid website for up to date information regarding tuition and fees. Contact the Financial Aid office for information about options. Some assistantships are available each year through our department and other locations on campus. Most EdS students would not be eligible for assistantships – as they are available to full-time students (enrolled in at least nine credit hours per semester) and typically require a 20-hour per week work commitment. The work assignments will vary depending on the assistantship. Students who obtain these positions will receive an extensive tuition reduction as well as a monthly stipend. Funding for these positions usually does not become finalized until the summer months, so it is difficult to know how many opportunities might be available until the summer. Applicants interested in assistantships should discuss this with the Chair of the Department of Leadership, Counselor Education, Human and Organizational Development upon receiving an offer of admission.
Most EdS students will not be required to complete any field experiences as part of their degree program, but a few options exist for students to develop additional or advanced skills in counseling. These options are detailed in the field experience courses listed below.
Field Experience Requirements for Initial School Counselor Certification
EdS students seeking initial certification in school counseling will be required to complete a practicum and 2 semesters of internship in school counseling.
EDC 830 School Counseling Practicum
School Counseling Practicum is offered only during fall and spring semesters and involves students completing a minimum of 100 hours in a school with a certified school counselor. This time commitment equates to approximately one day a week, or two half-days a week, for an entire semester. Students must arrange their work schedules to allow for at least half-days at their sites and must be at their sites throughout the course of an entire semester. The purpose of practicum is to learn about the school setting and to begin developing skills in individual and group counseling as well as classroom guidance. Of the 100 hours, students must accumulate 40 by providing direct services to students (i.e., individual or group counseling, or classroom guidance). In addition to the time spent at their sites, students will participate in weekly group and triadic supervision with university faculty.
EDC 841 School Counseling Internship
School Counseling Internship involves students completing 600 hours in a school with a certified school counselor across two separate semesters. The purpose of internship is to further develop skills in individual and group counseling and classroom guidance as well as to practice consultation skills by actively working with teachers and parents. Students are placed in K-12 schools and they can request specific building levels. During each semester, students are required to accumulate 300 hours at their sites, with a minimum of 120 direct hours per semester. This 300 hours equates to approximately two and a half days a week, or five half-days a week, for an entire semester. Students must arrange their work schedules to allow for at least half-days at their sites (i.e., it is not acceptable for hours to be accumulated in a piecemeal manner, with an hour or two here and there) and must be at their sites throughout the course of an entire semester. In addition to the time spent at their sites, students will participate in weekly group supervision with university faculty.
Please note — It is not possible for individuals to be employed full-time in a school setting in a position other than school (guidance) counselor during internship and successfully complete their internship requirements.
Field Experiences to Develop New or Advanced Skills in Counseling
Individuals seeking advanced training in counseling may request to enroll in EDC 915 Internship in Counseling Setting.
EDC 915 Internship in Counseling Setting
Internship in Counseling Setting is designed as a post-master’s internship, to be completed after the 600-hour specialty area internship. Students may request to complete this internship at their current workplace or at a new one, as long as an approved counseling supervisor is available on site. Specific learning goals must be developed between the student and the course instructor, detailing what unique and/or advanced skills are to be developed during the internship. In addition to the time spent at their sites, students will participate in weekly group supervision with university faculty.
