Recent News from Grant Support Services
November 19, 2009: GSS Closed in the Afternoon
GSS will be closed on the afternoon of November 19, 2009. We are attending mandatory training in OSP in the early afternoon, and the CAFLS Research Rocks celebration (honoring our CAFLS faculty) in the later afternoon. Please email your proposals and questions as usual to grants@clemson.edu, and we will review as soon as possible on Friday morning.
October 5, 2009: GSS Fully Staffed Once Again
We are pleased to welcome grants coordinator Tracy Gambrell back from maternity leave! It's great to have her back. We appreciate your patience during her absence, and all of us at GSS look forward to working with you in the future.
September 15, 2009: Beware of Additional Cost Share Commitments!
Recently, we have begun to see numerous awards coming back from sponsors that include cost share either not proposed in the original proposal, or in amounts much higher than originally proposed. In a few cases, we have learned that the sponsor contacted the PI directly to request more cost share. If you receive such a request from a sponsor, please contact GSS right away, so that we can assist you in determining the best options to pursue! In many cases, we are able to satisfy a sponsor's requests without overcommitting the PI's or the University's resources. Remember, cost share, also called match, is a commitment of real funds to a project and must be approved by the appropriate department head (or Dean in some cases). September 1, 2009: Faculty and Post-Award Personnel Now Have Access to InfoEd
OSP has now allowed faculty and post-award staff access to the InfoEd system. InfoEd is used to track proposal submissions and revisions at Clemson. Access to this system will allow you to view the status of your proposals, and to see where it is in the Clemson process. InfoEd can be accessed at https://infoed.clemson.edu. If you would like more details about how to use the InfoEd system, please contact Brigette Pfister at brigett@clemson.edu.
August 26, 2009: New Requirement for Award Acceptance from SPAA
If you have received a notice of grant award recently, you may have noticed a change to the wording of the email that comes from SPAA. For audit reasons, SPAA now requires a response to the award notification from the PI before the account will be opened for expenditures. To submit the required response, simply reply to the award notification email with the following: "I acknowledge that I have received the award and understand my obligations and commitments under this award." Once this acknowledgement is received, your project will be activated.
August 20, 2009: New Baby!
GSS is proud to announce the birth of Mia Lily Gambrell, born yesterday, August 19th! Congratulations to Grants Coordinator Tracy Gambrell on a beautiful and healthy daughter. Both Tracy and Lily are doing well. We hope to welcome Tracy back to the office sometime in early October.

July 31, 2009: New Official Policy on Timeline for Proposal Review Approved by CAFLS and PSA

July 15, 2009: Tracy Gambrell On Maternity Leave, GSS Short-Staffed
Tracy Gambrell, Grants Coordinator, is on maternity leave starting July 15, 2009. She is expected to return to the office in September. Until then, please keep in mind that we will be extra busy during this time. If you normally work with Tracy to submit your proposals, please send all proposals and communication to Brigette Pfister at brigett@clemson.edu.
July 1, 2009: FY 2010 F&A Rates and Fringe Benefits Rates
As of July 1, the FY2010 F&A and fringe rates will take effect. Please use the appropriate rate figures when planning your proposal budgets. The F&A rates can be found here. OSP has also released guidelines on calculating F&A on multi-year budgets. You can view these guidelines here. Fringe Benefits rates can be found here. Also, don't forget that you can forecast for future fringe rate increases on multi-year grant budgets in many cases. Some federal sponsors (NSF, DOD) will not accept forecasted rates, but most will. Budgeting for a moderate increase may help you ensure that you have enough funding.
