Planting seeds of peace in Afghanistan
Mac Horton: Clemson Public Service is coordinating a training program for South Carolina National Guardsmen to go to Afghanistan and help rebuild the agricultural infrastructure of that country. They are going to be functioning very much like our Extension Service does, in advising the appropriate leadership over there of how they might better improve all their practices from the production side all the way to the transportation, storage and sale at the ultimate consumer side. It lets the Afghani public know that we are not just bad guys, we are not trying to dominate them, we are really trying to help them. And a high percentage of the people that volunteer have a strong agricultural base. When we train them, we are just adding to the knowledge that they have already got, and we are making it more specialized.
