Change of Major

Nursing Students at Clemson University School of NursingNote that this year, we have two different applications depending on your status. Please read the instructions very carefully below and apply to only one application. Applying to both applications does not double your chances of getting into the program. You will be selected for the category that best fits your status. We will have fewer spaces for true freshmen so the odds do not increase for a true upper class student who fills out that application. You will receive email confirmation of submission after the application is completed online.

If you are a student who meets any/all of the following criteria:

  • has been enrolled at Clemson for one semester only,
  • is a true freshman.

You should use this link to apply:

If you are a student who meets any/all of the following criteria:

  • has been enrolled in college (Clemson or elsewhere) for two (2) or more semesters
  • must have two or more of the sciences required for Nursing completed (BIOL 1030/105 or 1100, CH 1010, BIOL 2220, 2230 or MICR 2050/3050)

Students are encouraged to run a what-if degree audit in iROAR prior to beginning the application process. This will help answer all of the questions related to the application. Here are the steps to do this:

1. Login to

2. Click on the "Student" tab.

3. Click on the "Student Records" tab.

4. Click on the "Degree Works" tab.

5. Degree Works defaults to your current major degree audit so you must click on the "What If" tab on the left side of the page.

6. Choose "Bachelor of Science" (if not already chosen), the appropriate curriculum year and "Nursing" for major.

7. You can then either save as a PDF (recommended) or view the document live in iROAR. Note for the question concerning "excess electives," you should scroll to the bottom of the page and count up the courses listed in the section clearly marked as excess electives.

The application has further information and details about the process for your review.

Nursing change of major application overview

1.  Applications are collected once a year in January only. Applications are available online from the School of Nursing and CBSHS Academic Advising Center websites during this time. Hard copy applications are no longer utilized. Students may email the nursing advisors for the link in January of each year.

2.  Minimally, students must have a 2.75 Clemson GPA and two of the five sciences that are required in the nursing curriculum completed with a grade of a “C” or better to be eligible to apply. However, admission is competitive. Students chosen typically have four of the five or all five of the sciences completed and a GPA over 3.0 (GPA may be more competitive than a 3.0 depending on the other applicants).

3.  Students are eligible to apply to change their academic program to nursing only twice at Clemson University.

4.  Students changing their academic program to nursing are not guaranteed admission; there are always more change of major applicants than there are clinical spaces for this group.

5.  Only students who apply and are accepted as true freshmen (first year of college at Clemson) will be able to graduate on time.  Students who successfully change their major to nursing after their freshmen year OR after enrollment at another institution first should expect to take an extra semester to complete the program. There is little chance that students will change their major to nursing and graduate on time in the program. Change of academic program students can “mirror” or “shadow” the first two years of the nursing curriculum with the exception of NURS 1400, NURS 3200, NURS 3330 and NUTR 2050. (Note: NUTR 2030 is not an acceptable course for nursing majors and will not be used for credit toward the nursing degree). Students should plan on taking these four courses in the fall semester after successfully completing the change of major application process in the previous spring semester. Clinical nursing courses will start the next spring semester.

6.  We highly recommend that all students pursuing change of academic program to nursing also pursue a parallel major plan along with the nursing curriculum that can lead to a career of choice. Note that minors do not necessarily lead to completion of degree requirements.  Students should work with academic advisors in the parallel major plan to determine specific requirements for that degree program.

 7. Full time students will be assessed the following academic program fee: $1000 per semester, beginning in the first semester of enrollment in the nursing program. More information about program fees can be found here

Please refer to the Nursing Curriculum Plan for Change of Major Nursing Students.

Change of major students should also run a “what if” degree audit in iROAR by following these steps:

1. Log in to

2. Click on "Student" tab and then "Student Records" tab.

3. You will see a direct link to the "Degree Works" system. Click this link.

4. In degree works, click the "What If" button directly under the "Worksheets" tab on the left column of the initial page.

5. From the "What If" screen, choose "Bachelor of Science" degree, the appropriate curriculum year and then choose which degree program you would like to pursue. You can run it or save and print.
