Message from the Founding Director

Kevin James, DirectorIt is an exciting time to be at Clemson, especially in the newly formed School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. Clemson has just transitioned to a Carnegie R1 University as the Department of Mathematical Sciences transitioned to the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS). I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the new school and to help set the direction and vision for these first few formative years.

The purpose of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is to pursue excellence in discovery, engagement, and learning while cultivating academic excellence, collaboration, diversity, inclusion and innovation. Our faculty is a first-rate research faculty and we continue to recruit top talent. Their publications appear in the top professional journals and many of our faculty receive regular support for their research through Department of Defense, National Institutes for Health, National Science Foundation, Simons Foundation, etc. We aspire to be recognized nationally and internationally as a hub of research activity in the Mathematical and Statistical Sciences which excels in instruction and mentoring.

In addition to our focus on research and discovery, we are also preparing the next generation with the analytical tools and deep understanding required to face the present and future challenges of our state and nation while preparing Clemson graduate and undergraduate students from a wide variety of disciplines with the mathematical and statistical tools to effectively navigate the rigors of their chosen fields of study and future careers. The future careers of Clemson students are more data intensive than ever and require state of the art tools and understanding of data science. It is imperative that as we develop as a leader in research that SMSS continue to seek to engage students innovatively at all levels in learning while also involving them in discovery in the Mathematical and Statistical Sciences.

While advancing in research and in learning and engagement it is also important that we develop and maintain an environment and culture in which everyone can thrive. We will maintain an inclusive and supportive working and learning environment in which faculty, staff, students, researchers and visitors are encouraged to engage and contribute to the collective understanding of the Mathematical and Statistical Sciences. We will seek and celebrate diversity among our student and faculty population by utilizing programs such as our new collaborative degree program with SC State.
