Employment Opportunities

Clemson started with a graduating class of 37 in 1896. Today, Clemson University has become a strong force in higher education and gained national recognition in areas from academics to athletics. Throughout the past decade, the University has consistently been ranked among the top 25 public institutions by U.S. News & World Report. During this time, the number of student admission applications and prospective employee applications have almost doubled, and the number of graduate degrees awarded has more than doubled.

It’s a great time to be a Clemson Tiger, and it’s a great time to be part of the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences.

Postdoc

The School of Mathematical and Statistical sciences at Clemson University is inviting applications for one postdoctoral position. This non-tenure-track position has a nine-month contract, with potential renewal annually to a maximum of three years and includes some summer support. The anticipated starting date is August 2022. Excellence in research and teaching for this position is expected.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of associate professor Timo Heister in the area of numerical methods for finite element discretizations. This position is partly funded by the NSF to work on specific projects. For this, expertise in open source software development, high-performance computing, linear solvers (multigrid), C++, CFD and visualization is desired and should be stressed in the cover letter. Knowledge of the deal.II library (dealii.org) and/or ASPECT (aspect.geodynamics.org) are a bonus. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field by the time of appointment.

In addition to the research as described above, the successful candidate will teach one course per year. There is also the option to earn additional salary in the summer for either research or teaching a summer course contingent on availability of funds and teaching needs of the school.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and three letters of reference with one letter addressing teaching experience. The cover letter should indicate how the applicant's work relates to the research areas mentioned above. Applications must be submitted through the following Interfolio URL: apply.interfolio.com/104441

Applications will be accepted until the positions have been filled. Completed applications for the postdoctoral position received by April 15, 2022, will receive full consideration.

The school contains two divisions: mathematics and statistics, and operations research, and includes the areas of algebra and discrete mathematics, data science, computational mathematics, operations research, probability and mathematical statistics, and pure and applied analysis. The school offers the full range of baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees. For further information regarding the school and its programs, please explore this website.

Clemson University has the highest Carnegie research designation (Very High, R1), and recently completed its Clemson Forward plan with strategic focus on advancing our doctoral programs and strengthening our research and scholarly impact while still preserving the outstanding signature undergraduate experience that is at the heart of Clemson. The Clemson Forward plan directed the building of a new world-class College of Science that harnesses the disciplines of biological sciences, chemistry, genetics and biochemistry, mathematical sciences, and physics and astronomy to solve tomorrow’s greatest challenges. Clemson Forward has at its core the mission of inclusive excellence in our students and faculty that will help Clemson ascend to a top-20 public university and a model for the 21st century land-grant university.

Moreover, the University, the College of Science and the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences are committed to building a community of inclusive excellence, where faculty scholars are dedicated to working and teaching in a multi-cultural environment. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from women, underrepresented minorities and from those who have experience and/or a commitment toward mentoring students from diverse backgrounds, as well as those who have demonstrated a commitment to understanding the challenges in promoting diversity and inclusion in mathematical sciences.  In addition, the college is supportive of the needs of dual-career couples.
