Dear Clemson Faculty and Staff:
As we begin another academic year, our campus is filled with hopeful students who represent many possibilities and opportunities. While each year Clemson University is able to touch the lives of thousands in our community, there are many others outside of our direct reach who need our help. Clemson University’s 2010 United Way Campaign is launching on October 1, 2009, and I hope that you will join me in making an investment in our community to make it safer, healthier and more productive.
We are constantly reminded of how fragile life is and how quickly lives can change because of an illness, natural disaster, or even an unexpected job loss. United Way is there to help with food, clothing, warmth, shelter and support services. United Way has helped your co-workers and neighbors, and even made a donation last year to our One Clemson Furlough Relief Fund. Now it is our turn to return that kindness.
I am pleased to announce that Marvin Carmichael, my Chief of Staff and Director of Financial Aid, along with Chief Diversity Officer Leon Wiles, will co-chair this year’s United Way campaign for university faculty and staff. They bring years of knowledge, compassion and United Way experience to the task. They know that United Way is a responsible steward of the contributions we make. Through their annual review process, our dollars donated to United Way are distributed efficiently and wisely right here in our own community. Clemson University employees have the option of making a one-time donation or deducting money from their paycheck each pay period. Simply complete, sign and return the attached pledge card indicating your choice of a payment method and amount. For those already making a United Way payroll deduction, please consider increasing your level of support for 2010. For those who have not contributed to the campaign before, we challenge you to consider doing so this year. The campaign deadline is October 31, 2009.
Each year, hundreds of Clemson students volunteer for and intern with United Way and its partner agencies. Today, we ask faculty and staff to join us in showing that Clemson University is a generous, caring community. Please make a donation or a pledge to support the important work of the United Way in our community.
Sincerely,
James F. Barker, FAIA
