Griffin (Co-PI), Katherine Cason (Co-PI) “Evaluation of the Zest Quest Health Promotion Model for Elementary Schools” The specific aims of this project are to assess the fidelity and impacts of this novel school-based health promotion model with an emphasis on physical activity and healthy eating behaviors among elementary school aged children. 
  • bullet (COMPLETED) NIH/NCCAM R01 AT003635, Thomas A. Arcury (PI) (09/30/06-05/11/07)  Joel E. Williams (Project Coordinator)“Ethnic Variation in CAM Use and Health Self Management Among Rural Older Adults” The overall goals of this project are to delineate ethnic difference in the CAM therapies used by rural elders and to determine ethnic differences in how these modalities are incorporated into health self-management.  Data are obtained through semi-structured in-depth interviews, guided by a health self-management and cognitive models of health conceptual framework.
  • bullet (COMPLETED) NIH/NCI R21 CA113943, Thomas A. Arcury (PI) (06/01/06-05/11/07) Joel E. Williams (Project Coordinator)“African American Men Prostate & Colorectal Cancer Belief” This study used qualitative methods to document and compare the beliefs of African American and white men concerning prostate and colorectal cancer, with particular emphasis on screening for these diseases.  Findings will be used to draft an intervention application to improve rates of screening among African American men.
  • bullet (COMPLETED) NIH/NICHD R01 HD045693, Dawn K. Wilson (PI) (06/13/05-05/26/06) Joel E. Williams (Postdoctoral Fellow)“Self-Determination for Increasing Physical Activity” This study is a randomized school-based trial to evaluate the efficacy of an after-school program for promoting increased physical activity and lowering obesity among adolescents.  The intervention arm utilizes social cognitive and motivational elements for eliciting psychosocial and behavioral changes.
