Tim Garrison has served as the university’s pre-law advisor since 2020 and has been advising students about law school and legal careers for almost twenty-five years. Garrison earned his B.B.A. and J.D. from the University of Georgia. After practicing law for several years in his hometown of Gainesville, Georgia, he returned to graduate school at Clemson, where he received an M.A. in History. He then completed a Ph. D. at the University of Kentucky, where he focused on the history of the American Indians of the South, United States Indian policy, and American legal history. Upon the completion of his doctorate in 1997, he accepted a position as a professor of history at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Along with his teaching responsibilities in American Indian history and American legal history, he served as Director of Native American Studies (2005-2009) and Chair of the Department of History (2014-2019). He now holds the rank of professor emeritus at Portland State. Garrison is the author or editor of the following works: The Native South: New Histories and Enduring Legacies (2017); “Our Cause Will Ultimately Triumph”: Profiles in American Indian Sovereignty (2014); The Encyclopedia of United States Indian Policy and Law (two volumes, 2008); and The Legal Ideology of Removal: The Southern Judiciary and the Sovereignty of Native American Nations (2002, paperback edition, 2009). He recently published an article titled “Twisting Air: Native Southerners and Their Encounters with Tornadoes” in Native South. He is currently completing a history of the United State Supreme Court’s “Cherokee cases” for the University Press of Kansas. In 2012 Garrison published an anthology titled Before the Paper Chase: The Scholarship of Law School Preparation and Admissions. Over the years he has held several leadership positions for national and regional prelaw associations.
