Andrea Feeser studies histories of place and community with respect to intertwined cultures and environments. Her 2006 book with Gaye Chan, Forgetting and Remembering Waikiki, examines how colonialism and tourism has compromised Waikiki, and was a 2007 National Council on Public History Book Award finalist. Feeser’s public art project with Chan, Historic Waikiki, was featured in the New York Asia Society’s 2004 exhibition Paradise Now? Contemporary Art from the Pacific. Feeser’s 2013 book Red, White, and Black Make Blue shows how colonial indigo culture still colors land use and race relations in South Carolina. In 2018, Feeser was invited to expand on this work in the research symposium “Routes of Indigo: Interwoven Histories of the Global South” at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute. Her 2021 Jimmie Durham, Europe, and the Art of Relations examines the recent work of artist Jimmie Durham, who explores how interactions among beings and places shape aesthetic and social experiences. Feeser has presented her research at conferences sponsored by the College Art Association, The American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, The Group for Early American Cultural Studies, and The Textile Society of America.
