Clemson University’s CVA - Greenville that will be located in The Village of West Greenville seeks to create a dynamic, hands-on, “real world” space where undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and alumni are directly involved with art historians, artists, critics and curators in developing, curating, installing, exhibiting, documenting and interpreting the best contemporary art happening today.

We will engage with a wide range of artists — from peers to professionals — on the local, regional, national and even international levels, and to develop unique means to promote and share these experiences with an equally wide range of audiences locally, across the Upstate and beyond. We expect this venture to provide our students and alumni with opportunities to foster job skills and life-long learning from a community of arts professionals.

Community Objectives

By creating a venue for neighborhood residents and visitors to “see” and “do” — to engage fully with the arts, artistic practitioners and culture “makers” in The Village of West Greenville — we hope to be a part of the transformation that is beginning to take place in neighborhood. Our local business partners have begun to renovate storefronts and attract new tenants. The City of Greenville has committed funds to support infrastructure and public transportation improvements. Potential outcomes of the combined efforts of the city, area business partners and Clemson University have the potential to impact the neighborhood in a number of ways.  For our part, we hope that our endeavors will:

Create an inclusive arts exhibition and interpretation venue that draws people together who would not otherwise be engaged in constructive community activities;

Become a source of pride for local residents, which will, in turn, foster further collective action for neighborhood growth and stability;

Help build stronger social networks through attendance and participation in our events;

Build trust among participants that we hope will inspire them to trust others; and

Allow participants in our events to glean interpersonal and artistic skills that may translate into an increased desire to engage with other educational and vocational opportunities.

The CVA - Greenville falls under the main umbrella of the Center for Visual Arts at Clemson University.
