Scholarship service program teams up with DoD
School of Computing student receives full graduate program funding
CLEMSON-School of Computing graduate student Jessica Jones received the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) scholarship this month. According to the National Defense Education Program, the scholarship comes from a Scholarship-for-Service program that partners with the Department of Defense.
The Department of Defense describes the award as “an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion.”
The scholarship provides recipients and their universities with “full tuition and education related fees, health insurance reimbursement allowance up to $1,200, and a book allowance of $1,000 per academic year.” Recipients complete summer internships at DoD facilities nationwide, and are guaranteed employment at a DoD facility after graduation. Jones received funding to finish her degree and complete a summer internship at her sponsoring facility in Indian Head, Maaryland and guaranteed employment after she finishes her degree requirements.
Jone’s acceptance of the scholarship promotes “the SMART Program’s aim to increase the number of scientists and engineers in the DoD. The program is particularly interested in supporting individuals that demonstrate an aptitude and interest in conducting theoretical and applied research.”
Jones said of her choice to come to Clemson University: "I chose Clemson University because the Human Centered Computing lab, under the leadership of Dr. Gilbert, combines two of my passions: computing and service. In the HCC lab, Dr. Gilbert and his students are designing and building technologies that improve the lives of everyday people and that make a persons experience with technology simpler and more accessible. When I heard about the research being done here, I knew I had to be a part."
