EFNEP - Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program
Pee Dee Area Success Stories
Success Story, By Carolyn Clark
Each day as I travel out doing my job, I run into kids that I have had the joy of working with. They come to
me, not remembering my name, but calling to me "Hey, Nutrition Lady!"
One little boy came to me, saying he is still drinking his milk. I taught lessons to his daycare when he was a toddler. When I first met him, he would not drink milk at all! His mother and I even had a conversation about it. She wanted to know how I got him to drink milk!! He is now 8 years old. When he saw me last week, the first thing he said to me was "I am still drinking my milk!"
It does a person good to know you have reached someone. I run into this often doing my work. I feel good knowing I was able to reach even one child.
EFNEP Success Story
Darlington County NEA, Ralph E. Johnson
I teach nutrition classes to senior citizens as well as Elementary School children. My "success story" is based on the lessons I taught to a group of 6th grade students at Spaulding Elementary School located in Lamar, SC. I taught these particular classes between October of 2002 and February of 2003. I had a total of 14 classes, which encompassed grades 4 through 6. There were a total of 290 students that participated in the training program.
At the conclusion of the 12-week program I presented graduation certificates to the students. One of the six grade classes presented me with a 3 dimensional Food Guide Pyramid, which they had made. The pyramid was made from cardboard construction paper and each level contained cut out pictures of items that were a part of that food group. The class members also wrote short "thank you" notes to me expressing their appreciation to me for teaching the classes. They also indicated some of the things they learned from this program as they wrote the following comments:
- "I thank you for the help you gave us on the food pyramid and health. I learned that the
foods we say are bad or not. That all the foods of the pyramid are bad if you eat a lot of them. But
use sweets less than the other food groups. Hope you had fun with us playing those fun games about health.
Hope to see you again soon someday."
~ A. Williams - "I would like to thank you for coming every week teaching us things. I have learned that pizza
is a combination food. Tomatoes can be in both groups, vegetable and fruit. We even learned that we can
have fun dividing food into different groups. Thanks for coming and teaching all of us more about
nutrients."
Thanks,
C. Robinson - "I wanted to tell you that I appreciate you coming and teaching us. Now, hopefully I will eat a
whole lot healthier. Anyway, I never knew that peanut butter was a meat and the servings of food. Again,
I say thank you."
~R. Pool - "Thank you for coming to our class to teach us the value of eating healthy and good eating
habits. I learned that Osteoporosis can be prevented by eating healthy and getting calcium. Once again,
thank you."
~ Sincerely, Jonathan W. - "Thank you for coming to our class and teaching us about our health. I learned a lot this year,
like carrots help you see, and how much serving are in the groups and calcium protects you from a
disease."
Yours truly,
~ J. Bullard - "Thank you for your time spent at Spaulding Elementary. You have shared a lot with us on how to eat
healthy.
It's important to drink milk so we don't develop the bone disease Osteoporosis. It is also important
to eat a good breakfast starting your day. When you eat you should eat healthy things in their right
servings and try to eat fats, oils and sweets sparingly.
To lead a healthy life it is important to eat right so you don't end up with food caused problems
like heart failure. This is important to all of us. Thank you for teaching us about this."
~ Sincerely, L. Ashley
