The graduate program offers specializations in:

  1. Chemical Fate
  2. Biochemical Toxicology
  3. Ecological and Aquatic Toxicology

You will work with a faculty member in conjunction with an advisory committee to develop a program of study tailored to your needs and interests, and to help you reach your professional goals. The MS degree requires 30 hours of credit, with at least 12 semester hours, exclusive of thesis research (ENTOX 891) in the major discipline. The Ph.D. degree requires 18 hours of dissertation research (ENTOX 991), a course of study designed by yourself, your advisor, and your advisory committee, and a dissertation.

Applying to the Environmental Toxicology Graduate Program

Prerequisites

Candidates enrolling in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs must meet all requirements for admission to the Graduate School and have an adequate background in the sciences. In general, the admission requirements include two semesters of basic chemistry, one semester of physics, calculus, two semesters of organic chemistry with laboratory, one semester of quantitative analysis or equivalent, two semesters of biology/zoology, one semester of ecology, one semester of statistics, one semester of biochemistry with laboratory, and one semester of physiology. Students may be admitted without this course background, but typically will be expected to make up those deficiencies. The courses used to address the deficiencies will be determined by your advisory committee.

One important step early during the admission process is to identify and contact faculty members with whom you have similar research interests and inquire about potential options for your research project. Students will not be admitted to the Environmental Toxicology graduate program without a faculty member’s willingness to serve as your Major Advisor. Faculty research interests and contact information can be found here.

Application Procedure

You need to complete an online application through Graduate Admissions and pay the $65 processing fee ($75 for international students). The program requires a written statement of purpose on your interests in graduate research and your professional goals.

Application deadline for Fall semester is February 1.

In addition to the online application, you will also need to submit the following items:

  1. Letters of recommendation: Strong letters of recommendation from at least two or three references who are familiar with the applicant’s academic background.
  2. GPA: GPA of at least 3.0 or its equivalent for previous coursework.
  3. GRE: GRE score of at least 1,000 (verbal and quantitative) and 4.0 (analytical). Master of Science candidates may be accepted provisionally with a lower GRE score. Clemson’s institutional code is R51111.
  4. TOEFL: Students from non-English speaking countries must have a score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL (Sections 1, 2, and 3 combined), 213 on the Computer-based TOEFL, or 80 on the Internet-based TOEFL. Lower scoring students may be accepted with other evidence of proficiency.

Financial Support

Graduate students accepted into the Environmental Toxicology graduate program are primarily supported as Research Assistants by their Faculty advisors. Continuation of assistantship support, regardless of source, is contingent upon satisfactory progress toward research and academic goals as determined by the student's annual progress evaluation.
