As an Instructional Designer with Clemson Online, Valerie Wheeler is part of the Curriculum and Instruction team. We are here as a service to faculty to help them develop high-quality online courses. She also helps faculty and staff maximize their use of the learning management system (formerly Blackboard, now Canvas). Lastly, she assesses and improves the quality and accessibility of online courses.
Valerie received an M.A. in International Relations in 2012, and after that she taught political science face-to-face and online for three years. Through her experiences teaching, she became more and more interested in the process of course design and the use of technology to enhance learning. Consequently, she began a Master of Education in Online Innovation and Design through the University of Alaska in January, 2016. She frequently draws from her teaching experience when working with faculty or considering course design, and she uses the skills she’s gained in her M.Ed. program in her work at Clemson Online on a regular basis.
Valerie’s favorite way to spend my time is with her husband and their dog. They love hiking and enjoying being outside. Her favorite season is whatever season is coming up next, so she loves living in the Upstate, a place that gets to enjoy all four seasons. She also considers herself a pretty good cook and enjoys trying new recipes whenever she gets a chance. While many people claim to have the best chocolate chip cookie recipe, Valerie believes that she actually makes the best chocolate chip cookie. In fact, it’s been confirmed by multiple people who have eaten them. (There’s a secret ingredient that she will only reveal if someone asks nicely.)
